I’ve owned two vices previously, Veniard and Orvis. This vice is far superior. The jaws are small enough to hold small hooks, e.g. size 20 or smaller, as well as larger hooks for streamer flies. The rotary action is very smooth for those who like to rotate the fly while binding on hackles, dubbing, ribbing. I still tend to tie my flies more with the vice head fixed, but it is handy to get a 360 deg view of the fly during the tying process. I have both the clamp and pedestal bases. The pedestal is quite heavy and keeps things very steady. I tend to use the pedestal more than the clamp. It’s easier to keep the vice assembled on the pedestal and simply move it to another part of the desk than unclamping/reclamping the vice when not using it. The vice comes with a convenient carry case if needed.
